This morning about 1030 / 11ish we cleaned out my bird (cockatail) and his right toe started to bleed, it seemed to have stopped, then about 20 minutes ago we checked him again after covering him up so he could rest and the toe was bleeding again?! There was about 5 drops of blood and it was over his perch he was sat on too... What shall we do?

  1. Catch the bird put . Take a look at the toe. Put some flour on the bleeding. Try to keep bird quite for a little bit the more he jumps and fly's the more blood pressure goes up and bleeds. If it does not stop or he keeps picking at it call the vet. It does not take a bird much blood to bleed to death. They have very little blood in their tiny bodies. Not to scare you but  wanted to warn you. There is also syptic powder and gel that is sold for birds which is safe not for bleeding beaks though. For the toe it would be ok. check its nails.

  2. Even if it is just a scratch - any open wound can get infected which can cause death if left untreated. Keep a close eye on it. I'd get him checked out by a vet in the next few days to be sure (unless it's pouring out blood, in that case, ASAP)

  3. 3yrs ago had a budgie who was 10 yrs old

he had his right foot bleed abit

if ur bird wont stop peelin the dry bleed

if u see he bout to shake which means he/she bout to fall by losing blood or cant stay up proberly

or wont stop bleeding at all

I would perfer to call 24hr animal emergency service by yellowpages ur closest vet thats my recommend

  4. it the bleeding persists, put either baking soda on it or tissue not a lot, but a tiny piece to clot the bleeding, if it persists I would consult a doctor.....

  5. Two months ago my bird was flying around in the kitchen.

Shes tried to land on a glass, unaware it was chipped the poor thing cut its foot badly.

I was devastated it wouldn't stop bleeding because she was picking at it and i was so worried. I took it to the vet and they said its $80 to see a vet and what ever cost for treatment.

There was no way i could afford that since i was getting paid a minimum wage.

So i  got an antiseptic wipe and cleaned he foot.

i took everything out of her cage and lay ed down a towel on the base of her cage and inside of the cage on the bars. i put a mirror in there to keep her entertained. I then put a sheet over he cage to convince her it was night and she would go to sleep.

the next day i checked her and there was no specs of blood as before her perch was covered in blood.

This did the trick to for me and she has made a complete recovery.

  6. If its toe starts bleeding again try putting baby talc powder on it to stem the bleeding. Blood always looks worse than it really is because it runs all over everything.

Your bird was probably playing with his toes and pulled a nail keep an eye on him because he'll keep playing with it making it bleed again.

Wash the perches with cold water once you are sure that the bleeding has stopped.

  7. if it keeps bleeding go to a vet
