Question:

My blood test revealed low potassium (2.3). Is it still safe to exercise?

I am aware that low potassium can effect muscle function (including the heart)... but how low is dangerous? My GP didn't advise!

I am taking a potassium supplement and my bloods will be checked again next week... but in the meantime I was wondering if it's still okay to do strenuous exercise like running, jogging, cycling etc? I don't want to get unfit, but also don't want to have a heart attack, especially as I exercise alone in isolated areas!

Only people who know what they're talking about answer please! Thank you.

  1. Its totally safe. Just keep taking those pills and eat alot of bananas.

  2. i had a friend with potassium issues, and her personal trainer made her do exercises still, but if she had a single drop of sweat, my friend had to stop and take time to cool off. sweating makes you lose potassium.

bananas, orange juice, and a spoonful of black-strap molasses are all good for putting the potassium back in you.

  3. Potassium is an electrolite that works with other things to control your heart rate.  Did the doctor perscribe you Vitamin K (Potassium)?  Please talk to your doctor before doing anything!  With low or high potassium (one is just as bad as the other) it is something that needs to be discussed with your doctor.  I don't want to scare you but the minimum amount for an adult should be 3.5.  My mother is a heart patient with low potassium.  I've done lots of reasearch and had many talks with her doctor about this.
