My blue tongue has a split across the base of its tail what is it?

the split goes horizontally across the tail, behind the back legs. It isn't deep but he won't let me turn him over to have a good look at it. i noticed it a week ago. I know he has a vertical split which is his butt, but never seen this horizontal split before. What is it?

Is it on the top part of his tail?  If so, it sounds like he is getting ready to drop his tail...it can and will break off if handled roughly.  They do grow back.  Read on the "autotomy" link on this link for more info.
