My boat has a new water pump but they tell me that it's probably clogged.?

I don't know much of my used boat but what advice could I get to get it running.

It's a Glassmaster Boat.

Engine: Johnson 50

It turns on well and leaks oil thru the bottom I don't know where that is coming from.

Previous owner said he put a new water pump he parked it for a long time and he said that it probably insect nests or something.

If it's clogged how do I unclogg it. What do you suggest?

Serious answers only please.

  1. Many of these engines have what we call a "pee hole". When the engine is running you should see a stream of water coming from this hole. It usually located on the right back of the engine just below the cover. Remove the cover and you see it have a rubber hose from the engine connected to it. This is easy to remove and unclog. Also, you can use compressed air with an air spray nozzle and blow into it when the engine running. We have disconnected the hose and cleaned out the little hole and hold the hose over the side and crank the engine to blow any other stuff out. If, this not work, the man may have installed the water pump/impeller incorrect. Never run the engine out of the water as this too can damage the impeller. They make "Ear Muffs" you can connect a water hose to start in your yard.

The oil leak? Where it come from? Behind the propeller? This could be a seal.

  2. if indeed there is an animal nest in you cooling system i doubt it is in the pump itself ,i would guess they mean the impeller.......,try spraying into the pick up areas at the lower end sides of the drive,, if it is mudd, you will break it up ,but odds are if it was ran for any length of time while clogged ,it will need a new impeller ..good luck

  3. many people who have an impeller failure neglect to check the pump housing. if the old impeller broke apart there might be a piece stuck in the discharge hole on the housing or in the water tube itself. inspect the housing for damage like melting I have seen plastic housings melt themselves closed or melt the liners to the housing this will cause cooling problems. as mentioned earlier do you have an overheat problem or is the indicator plugged . as mentioned use compressed air. impellers can and do deteriorate over time so replace every couple years or more in heavy use. the one person is correct an impellor will fail in seconds if run dry I have even seen cases where home mechanics have cranked their motor many times and never got it to run but still fried the impellor even with the starter!   as far as the oil is it black and smells like gas? or is it white and milky?. if a outboard sits for a while the exhaust residue(gas and oil) runs down the inside of the exhaust housing and exits through different places in the lower unit even the propshaft area. if it is white and milky chances are it is gear oil. as stated by someone else check for water in the gear case. you can also have the lower unit pressure and vaccum tested for leaks(easy to do and inexpensive) hope this helps. if you end up with a problem and write back in give model # and year

  4. The water pump repair kit is about $45-50. (impeller, gaskets, seals), the impeller by itself is $30

Replace it, since you don't know if the clog damaged the impeller.  Long time? how long is long? the rubber could have harden (dry rotted) even

  5. The "telltale" is a small outlet under the motor that squirts water when the motor is running(hopefully).

To check for a clog, find the telltale hose inside the housing and disconnect it from the motor (pump) end.  A small shot of air should tell you whether its clogged or not (just blow into it ,watch for debris). If that fails, perhaps the seller was wrong when he told you the pump was repaired. An impeller in the pump will deform after just 5 seconds of running time if it has no water to cool it. You may need an impeller.

As for your oil leaks, you probably need a gasket set. You should take it to a reputable dealer and have it assessed and/or repaired.

Good motor but, weigh the price of repairs against the cost  of replacement.

  6. The leaking of oil would have nothing to do with the water pump - and if the water pump was clogged you should be able to tell - just check the indicator spray on the port side of the motor (looking back) - should be spraying pretty hard.  The oil is most likely coming from the lower case gear unit - you should be changing that oil at least once per year - drain it out and check if there is any water in there - if so you could have a problem.

If your concerned about the water pump - it's a simple fix, and really cheap just buy the kit, remove the lower half of the outdrive...and pull her out
