  1. If your boat has always been slow to get on top, get the prop repitched to a lower pitch- this will aid you in getting on plane quicker. If this is a recent problem, the problem lies in the motor needing a tune up. But the hydrofoil or dolphin fin that you are asking about goes above the prop and attaches to the foot of your motor- it will get the boat on plane in a heartbeat, and keep it from jumping also. They work very well.

I bought a 16 foot aluminum boat and put a 60 hp mercury 4 stroke on it-to help it get up on plane faster, and eliminate any jumping, I had two aluminum plates welded to the boat bottom, effectively extending my boat bottom by a foot on both sides of the motor- I had turnbuckles attached to them to prevent them from bending upward-these work fantastic- it jumps on plane immediately, and does not bounce a bit. You might look into this if your boat is aluminum. Good luck!

  2. tune up...yes. get it most definitely for it will help most.

think about the "fin" for the drive for a second. if the manufacturers thought it was worthwhile don't you think they would offer it as an add on to the cost of a boat? since they don't, well...

bags of sand up front isn't a bad idea but why put the extra weight in the vessel? fuel is expensive enough already and you don't need to add to this!

what can you do? check your prop and see if you need to step up a size/pitch or down. lighten the load in the vessel if at all possible too. if you keep the vessel in the water power clean the bottom. that gosh darn slime will slow you down more than you can imagine!

    best of luck!

  3. Its called a Fin, you can buy them at Walmart now in the sporting section.

    I hope that helps

  4. First, get the tune up.  But to help your boat get onto plane faster what you're looking for is called a hydrofoil.

  5. Definately do the tune up.

The thing you are looking for doesn't go on the propellar, it goes above it. It is called a hydrofoil, some folke call it a fin. They come in a bunch of different brand names, with Dol-Fin being the top selling brand name. It doesn't actually get you up on a plane any faster. What it does is keep the front of the boat down to improve handling when on a plane.

Some reasons she may not plane out fast are, too much weight already toward the front of the boat. Too much weight period in the boat. Boat too big for motor. Prop not deep enough in water. Wrong pitch prop for the application. When you slam the throttle forward, the front of the boat should come up 1-2 feet within 100 feet or so.(Even on a 21 footer) If it's not doing that, I'd be looking at one of these reasons for it.

  6. you should get the tuneup no matter what. but is what i have done in the past, is get some about 3 sand bags and put them inside the front of the boat. you can use other items. but i used the sand bags. Be careful not to tear a hole in them though. That is a mess and a half!!!
