My boat only runs on reverse, How I can fixed?

I remember having a 50Hp evinrude outboard- 1979 model I think that developed a problem with one of the small black boxes ( it was white) under the flywheel that controlled the spark advance.  You would start it it would miss almost stop an catch again with the motor turning the wrong way so that fwd and reverse were reversed.  It was a component of the ignition system that controlled the spark advance but no idea what its real name was.

I know nothing about boats, but if it runs in reverse when its in forward, then maybe the propeller thing (not propeller, thats on a plane, but I can't think of the word..the thing that spins to make it go...) anways, that would mean its on backwards so it pushes the water the wrong way.

sorry I didn't really make sense, i hope you know what I meant. =]

unlikely that your propeller is on backwards.

More likely the cables need adjusting. Follow the control cables to the engine and look where they connect and should be adjustable. Put control in neutral and motor should be in neutral.

I agree, it's not the transmission -- boat motors don't have transmissions.

There's no amount of cable adjusting that can make the prop spin the wrong direction.

The type of boat is not relevant -- it's the motor we need to know about.

Year, make, horsepower?

Inboard, outboard or I/O?

Be more specific than "only runs in reverse".

What happens when you select forward gear?

The engine dies?

The boat goes backwards instead of forwards?

The engine stays in neutral instead of shifting?

Has it been like this since you got it, or it was running fine before this started?

What recent maintenance has been done on the motor?

What other symptoms are you experiencing?
