My boss at work tells me he is getting complaints about me

I am working a miserable job as a temp for the foreseeable future. Or at least until they fire me. I was called into the bosses office today and here is a summary of the conversation:

BOSS: I just wanted to know I have been talking to some of the people in the office and many of the people are not happy with the customer service you are providing them.

ME: I am committed to doing a good job so I would like to sit down and talk to the people who are complaining about me and find out what their concerns are, so I can do a better job next time.

BOSS: I am sorry but that is not possible because they came to me in confidence. I promised them that I would not tell you who they were.

ME: Then could you tell me what I did wrong so I can do a better job next time.

BOSS: Sorry, I can not get into details because that way you would find out who is complaining about you.

ME: Then I can not improve because I do not know what I am doing wrong.

BOSS: (just before he leaves the room) Just clean up your act and do a better job in customer service.

I am working as a temporary Administrative Assistant and am now demotivated. How can the boss not tell me what I am doing wrong unless he lets me know who is complaining about me behind my back. (He wants people to be able to come to him in confidence but the final result is management by gossip.) The agency just said do your best and they will try to find something for me if I get fired. (Doubtful... because I will have a black mark on my record)

  1. As a temp, he needs no reason at all to send you packing.  Thank God he gave you the heads up he did.  All he has to do is call your employer and tell them to tell you to no longer show up.   Talk to your employer for feedback.

  2. uh...you're a temp. He's going to take care of his fulll time employees first and foremost. I'd ask the agency to reassign me.

  3. Usually, if it is a customer service job, there is phone tap. I think, the boss is probably listen to you over the phone. He/she presents him/herself as a 3rd person. See what you might have done wrong and stop doing them. I guess that s the best way to deal with it. Usually on customer service the main things are; be courteous, kind, and be alive when you are on the phone, dont sound depressed, do not try to get the customer off the phone, be kind to everyone.

  4. the agency doesn't care if you get fired - they get you another job then they get paid too. just a chance for a new sale to them.

but I would say your issue is plain - form your screen name you have an ego that is too big for your britches, and yet you are not motivated to help your employer accomplish its tasks. But I bet you would be loud to complain if they only paid you in proportion to the motivation you feel.

if you don't like your job, then quit, and get a new one that you do like!

    duh!

  5. I'd see if I could schedule a meeting with the boss. Ask for a detailed job description so that you can fulfill your duties to the best of your knowledge and abilities. If he's less than forthcoming and you still want to continue to work for this company, go to human resources. See if you can get an employee handbook and a detailed copy of your job description there.
