Question:

My boss wrote a note on my timecard?

Telling me to punch in and out according to the schedule. Lately, the guy who takes over my shift has been coming in very early (like 20-30 minutes early) and punching in. I don't like to wait there because he makes me feel uncomfortable. So, I'll punch out about 10-15 minutes early. Now, my boss has approached me about it before saying that his only concern is that I realize I'm losing money on my check by doing that, but that it makes no difference to him. Now, why would he write that note on my time card? He's not here so I can't talk to him. I just feel like I'm in trouble or something. I mean, I never clock in early. I am actually saving my boss money because I'm not working overtime. Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Not sure where I should put it.

  1. Just email your boss and tell him what you wrote here.

  2. I understand why you are punching out early, but I don't think it's a good thing to continue doing.  First, I know you are "saving your boss money," but what you are doing has potential legal ramifications for your boss.  Some bosses (NOT him), make their workers clock out early to underpay the workers, and this is brought out later, when the workers are fired or quit and sue for wrongful termination, lost wages, and etc.  So, a careful boss would want to protect the integrity/accuracy of the time cards.

Second, you boss may be making a point by writing the note on your time card -- so that all could see, and so that there is a written record of the official policy.

Third, if there is really a problem with the other guy who makes you uncomfortable, you need to solve the problem another way now that you boss has put in writing that you are not to punch out early.  If the guy is harassing you, you need to do something.  If you just don't like guy for general reasons, can't you still punch out on time?  How long does it take to punch out anyway and do you and he have to hang around the time clock for a significant amount of time around your punch out time?

  3. He may have written it on other people's as well. He might want to prevent people from doing what that other guy is doing. He is taking money away from you (the guy not your boss). He should not be clocking in that early.

  4. punch out when you are suppose to let your coworker wait around to start or let him start and you relax those last moments before punching out

  5. Maybe the guy who takes over your shift is in trouble.  Just do as your boss asked in the note until you have a chance to speak with him.

  6. I dont think you are in trouble......if he noticed you clocking out early he knows the other guy is clocking in,  He just does not want the other guy getting more hours, 15 minutes early 5 times a week is 2.5 extra hours, so if he works 40 hours already then he is making overtime and your boss def does not want that.  So its just so your boss can keep is affairs straight.

  7. Sounds like an FYI situation to me.  He was just letting you know you didn't HAVE to punch out and cost yourself the pay because the other guy showed up.

  8. It might be just for his own protection in case there is ever a question or complaint. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounds like there is coverage. Did you mention to your boss that you feel uncomfortable with that guy? It seems the boss should ask him not to get to work so early. That would be the solution I would look for if I were manager.
