I turned my small boug that was in a 6 inch pot into a bonsai today because I heard that they make great bonsai. What I did was take it out of the plastic pot it came in, cut the roots just enough for it to fit into my bonsai pot, and fertilize it. After doing that I searched online to learn more about them and found out that you shouldn't touch the roots! Is my boug going to die?? Also, I know that you're not supposed to water them often but is it ok if rain water gets on it?

  1. Sorry, I do not speak english well, because I am Brazilian

    That you embarrass did.

Bougainvillea spectabilis is native of Brazil, here it is called of Primavera (spring) it is the family of the nictagináceas, it grows up to 5 meters of branches with thorns driven as creeper, it blooms during the whole year, it likes full sun, it prefers humid hot climate, it likes a lot of light, it supports drier soil could be watered only 1 time a week, it likes sandy soil, when planted in vase, the mixture is 1 soil part common of garden, 1 part of vegetable soil and 2 of sand.

If it rains it has to have a good drainage.

  2.   cutting the roots of a plant is not good. and fertilizing it after cutting them may be worse. remember to give it the right kind of fertilizer and the right amount. if you over fertilize, you may burn the plant. do not water it too often. keep in mind that this plant needs warm weather to grow and needs to be protected in winter. they are frost sensitive. there are many reasons for a plant to start dieing... bad planting technique(cutting roots), planting too deep, over/ underwatering, wrong kind of fertilizer or wrong amount, etc. it is hard to tell if it is going to die, but you have made mistakes.

  3. Black Swan already explained well.

  4. It's probably in shock from the surgery and transplant.  I would not have fertilized it.  I would cut off most of the leaves because it no longer has roots to give them water and food.  Don't put it in strong light because it will dry out (no roots.)  Be gentle with everything and hopefully it will begin to grow new roots, then some new leaves, then it should be ok.
