My boxer gave birth to 5 pups one week ago. She is still bleeding, somewhat heavy at times. Is that normal?

She is also not eating unless I add boiled hamburger meat with her food and we don't feed her people food any other times. Is her body adjusting to having the pups or is there a problem?

  1. It is normal for them to bleed, her uterus is still cleaning out. They can bleed up to 4 weeks after whelping. Did the vet exam her & puppies recently? The sometimes retain placentas & puppies. Both can cause a nasty infection.

  2. If she's still bleeding, I'd say you have problems. She needs to be in the best of health to nurse those pups. You need to take her to your Vet, ASAP. It could be serious enough to not only jeopardize her health, but also the well being of her pups. Don't risk it. get her to a vet.

  3. Yes my st.bernard had 13 babies and she bleed for more than a week we also cooked rice, lean ground turkey, egg and a slice of bread. She loved it and thats the only time she ate human food

  4. Normal vaginal discharge after parturition should be odorless and may be green, dark red-brown or bloody and may persist in small amounts for up to 8 weeks.

She may just be adjusting but if you are concerned, call your vet and ask for some help.

  5. 1 week is still just a discharge, just like us.  If it is fresh bright red blood, please take her to the vet.  Hamburger + rice is a good bland diet for a dog, but she needs to see your vet.  Also, "The Missing Link" is a great additive for her food.  It helps a lot for a whelping ***** to recover!!  Available at Petco and Petsmart.  email me if you have ?????s!  luvmydog@pacbell.net
