My boyfriend has been in jail for a year now & recently wrote me in a letter that he was sent to the "pen" but won't tell me exactly why or give me any details. I think he's done something REALLY REALLY bad and he doesn't want to tell me. What crimes can inmates commit to get them sent to the pen and what are your thoughts on this?

  1. in my opinion, i would not be with someone who was sent to the pen or even associate with. to me it is not a good way to start or continue a relationship that could lead on to a family. it is NOT okay.

    well good luck!

  2. Find a new boyfriend.

  3. "Pen" is short for penitentiary. Penitentiary is prison.  Any crime which carries a jail sentence can result in being sent to jail.

  4. Hello Dee. When a person has been arrested, the charges are considered public knowledge.

At this point in time, you can call the Sheriff's Department he was being held at, ask for records and identify the person. They are allowed to tell you what he was convicted of and what prison he was taken to.

(PS...."The Pen" refers to a State Penetentiary, or prison)

If you want further information, you can then contact the prison itself and ask again for records. They will give you the actual charge he is incarcerated under and his estimated date of discharge (EDS).

To answer you specific question, a person can only be sent to prison for the conviction of a felony crime. With the exception of certain new Class 5 felonies, a felony is any crime which carries a sentence of a year and a day or more. The newer class 5 was created for lower class felonies (such as drug abuse or possession cases) and can carry a sentence of under 1 year but still mandates the sentence to be carried out in prison instead of the county jail.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
