  1. Get him a military challenge coin. Get one with his rank and engrave his name on it. Its small, probably less likely to get jacked like a watch or a camera, its something he'll start collecting as he goes through his military career. you can find them online.

  2. Wait until he gets to his first duty assignment and find out his living arrangements.  If he is living in the barracks a very nice "military" type watch would be less likely to get stolen.

I would suggest a Citizen Eco-Drive Black Eagle Skyhawk.  JR-3155-54E.  It can easily switch to times around the world,  has a stop watch and timer built in and a slide rule on the outside for calculations.  It runs on light so never needs batteries or winding.  Plus it has three timers built in so he can use them to remind himself of events.  It is also water resistant to 10 BAR which is about 333 feet down so he never has to worry about it getting wet in the shower or lakes.   Also it looks good.   The official price is $475 but you can find it for less at the second website listed.   Or try your local stores.

  3. Does he have a Gerber yet? It's basically a multi tool. But my hubby wears it on his uniform every day. He had a little one that he gave me when he got the bigger one. I use it all the time. They are very handy.

  4. Buy him his own personal K-BAR,,Its a USMC knife and every Marine would like to have his own.  You can get it engraved if you wish..

And tell him to ask for recruiters assistance if he has not already..

  5. I think you should get him a pre-paid visa card/ gift card. That way he can spend where he wants and on whatever it is he may want. He may have a need right now that he doesn't want people to know so if he has a visa he can use it anywhere in the world where it's accepted.
