go to a beach of some sort, but we don't want a touristy Cancun or anything like that. We want it to be a safe place for travelers, but still rich in Mexico's culture and not covered in huge hotels and condos. Any suggestions?

  1. playa azul/puerto vallarta.Juanajuato (sp?)

the first and third are pretty remote.

  2. playa del carmen

  3. Cozumel or Playa de Carmen.  Not as much party towns as Cancun; close to many ruins.  Excellent diving and snorkeling.

  4. I had to edit this. Hi there! I would be gladly to help. If you want a rich cultural experience then I recommend you to go to the colonial cities. The colonial cities are generally very safe. Merida and Campeche some of mexico's most beautiful cities near the beach. They are not too touristy and the essecne of Mexican culture can be felt. Atleast the culture of the yucatan peninsula since Mexican culture is very regional. Campeche is also a walled city. There are also cities that are not near the beach but I definatley recommend these cities if your looking for a more cultural experience. I recommend you to visit Guadalajara which is where I am from. It is the second largest city in the country. This city is very unique as it is the birth place of the charros (national symbol) , tequila (national drink), and mariachi (national music). Guadalajara's historic center is beautiful with many buildings that  date from the 16th century all the way to the 19th century. You must also visit the district of Zapopan in Guadalajara! Puerta Vallarta is a coastal city not too far from Guadalajara if you want to visit the beach. But Puerta Vallarta is very touristy and it also has a historic center that resembles the towns along the Mediterranean sea. Guanajuato is also a very beautiful city that resembles the spanish medieval cities or an Italian hill town. The city contains many narrow streets that are paved with cobblestones with many beautiful buildings that also date back to the 16th century. Not too far from Guanajuato is another beautiful city named San Miguel De Allende. Morelia is once again another colonial city with many beautiful buildings with cobblestone streets with an a roman style aqueduct that circles around the city. The city's cathedral is one of Mexico's most valuable cathedrals. Zacatecas is another city similar to Guanajuato. This city is located more in northern Mexico compared to the rest of Mexico's colonial cities that are mostly in Central and Southern Mexico. Puebla is also a must see! The city is amazing! It is considered the most Spanish city of Mexico in terms of architecture. Puebla's cathedral is also another Mexican jewel. I also recommend Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, and Taxco. These old world cities is where most of Mexico's culture developed and spread their culture through out the country. I will happily give you links to pages with many pictures of these cities to help you decide! I promise you that you won't regret your visit to these old world cities. These cities will show you how the Mexican way of life is lived everyday.

  5. Wherever you go, avoid the border. That's where people try to sell you things and have the most chaos, especially if you go by car.

  6. I guess you should stick to the tourist destinations (cancun and such). Its not as romantic but at least In Europe we consider Mexico a third world country so you always have to be careful.
