I think you should be honest with his friends and tell them the truth. They might be mad at first, but they wont be mad with you, just the situation, and you will probably be able to open up to his friends and support each other.

His friends were his friends, and if they were any sort of people would be understanding about it. After all, they liked him as much as you did. I think you should just be honest and say to them, there is no point in hiding it from them, cos the truth will come out sooner or later.
