  1. Without an xray we can't really know if it's broken or not. Swelling, bruising and pain tell us there is an injury. Just because something is broken doesn't mean you can't bend it or walk on it, etc. When he landed the force of impact went up his leg and apparently injured his knee as well. It's doubtful that he cracked anything in the knee but it's possible he cracked something in his foot.

Usually for the 1st two days ice 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off and after 48 hours go to heat 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Advil 600mg every 6 hours with food to help as an anti-inflammatory and to decrease pain. Rest, elevation of the leg. See if it helps otherwise it's the doctor's office and an xray.

  2. He should see a doctor.

  3. Definitely, definitely go to a doctor/hospital and get it checked out. It could very well be broken or fractured. Until you can get to a doctor, I'd ice it; I think the method is 20 minutes iced, 20 minutes not? Keep off it, and have it propped up on a pillow or something. That may help with the swelling.

And I would get the knee checked out as well, that could have suffered some damage as a result of the fall - 12 feet is quite a height and would place a huge amount of strain upon landing on the leg, including the knee.
