My boyfriend loves Russian names and has chosen Marko Rual for our second son? Rual is for his favorite uncle.

Question

We had made a deal that if it was a girl I would get to choose and pick a name. He gets to choose if it was a boy. I thought for sure I was having a girl. But I was wrong again and he went on the internet and looked under Russian names and fell for Marko. I know Rual is not Russian but he loved his uncle and stuff so I can't say no to that. But Marko? I am not sure, because all I can think is the poor boy will be made fun of being called Marko Pollo! His 2 oldest daughters said the same thing.

He has his mind set. For our first son he named him Ivan, which is cool to me.

But What do you think of Marko? Is it me or does it not sound right?

I know two Marcos and never made the Polo connection.  Please use Marko.  It's a great and uncommon name.

Just because the name is his choice doesn't mean he gets the only say. Tell him you don't like the name Marko so keep searching.

My wife, and I have the same agreement, but we still approve eachother's choice on the name. I suggested plenty of boy names she didn't like, and there were millions of others to choose from.

I have no problem with the name Marko by itself.  But if the surname would be anything that resembles Polo, it will cause difficulties.  The Russian scheme for names is to use the father's name as a middle name -- which is what I did with my son's name.

I like Marko.

When I was a kid, noone even knew what Marco Polo is, so I doubt he'll get the Marco Polo stuff.

Marko is a very good name, It's not common, and even if people do call him Marko Polo, it's not that bad. There are a lot worse things to be named.

It's not like you're naming him Harry d**k, or Mike Hunt of something horrible like that.

You must really hate your son, or you plan to homeschool him.

Every time the kid says his name, someone will always yell out, "Polo!"

...or, kids on the playground will just beat him...just because.

He was always get c**p for his name if it is Marko. What your boyfriend needs to realize is kids are a lot more creative and cruel today than they probably were when he was younger. And he really needs to think about how the name will effect your son. He is the one that will have to grow up with the name calling and remarks not your boyfriend. He needs to quit being so selfish and realize what he is doing by naming your son that.

Why don't you just call him Mark and use Marko as a nickname?  I know a guy named Marco and he gets the "Polo" c**p all the time, and he's 25 still getting the c**p!

I don't care for it at all. It sounds like a nickname. Name is Mark and call him Marko as a nickname.
