my boyfriend was driving my car home and the car in front of us didn't go when the light turned green. He tapped them but it still left marks on the back of their car.. it was just my license plate marks. My license plates were pushed in a bit. no cops were called. we switched numbers.. who's policy number should be given to the car that he hit. my car has no damage.. will my rates go up even though i wasn't driving?

  1. insurance goes with the car it is reported to your insurance company...

  2. Show him where the horn is located. Show him how to use it and give it just a small tap to make it work. Ask him to do it a few times so he can get familiar lightly tapping the horn.  Tell him very slowly that slightly honking on the horn is much better for everyone concerned rather than hitting the other car regardless how lightly he intends to hit it.

One reason is that he may not be aware of something directly in front of the other car (dog, cat, wheelchair, child) and if he taps the other car, the other driver could accidentally get panicked and hit the gas pedal causing injury or death to something.  Tell him to have patience when driving. We all get caught up or distracted once in awhile and don't always move on a green light, it's human. A friendly little tap on the horn is best remedy.

  3. If he had permission to drive your car, your insurance is responsible.

  4. Policy number? Yours.  He did the driving. He did the damage. But it was the car that did the banging.   And that is what they are registering.

The car is "just a car".  Cars don't get impatient, or into accidents - people do.

There is a chance that insurance will go up for you because your vehicle was involved(and maybe not).      Some insurances cover the car (regardless of who is driving-no fault insurance)but the insurance goes up for the driver involved and for the car.

Other insurances go after the driver and just nail the driver.

You should expect him to cover your excess if there is such a happening for his impatience.  There was a horn button he could have pressed to wake them up.  Does far less damage.

  5. his policy for sure.   if no cops were called, you can do this without any problem.  your insurance would definitely go up if you give your insurance info.  the best thing would be to try to settle this with cash if the other party is willing.

  6. Your car, your insurance.

If the driver which was hit files a claim against your policy, your rates will go up.

For these little things, you should have just offered to pay cash and keep the insurance companies out of it.

Lesson learned ... don't let anyone else drive your car.

  7. It was your vehicle.  As long as he was not an excluded driver, our liability coverage will pay for the damage.  His would kick in only if the damage was in excess of your policy limit.  He will get the surcharge.

  8. your rates will not go up but your boyfriends will. your policy information is what needed to be given.

  9. For minor damage it might be just cheaper (for both sides) to just handle the damage for few dollars.  The bumpers get really banged up from parking anyway.  Just negotiate it for $50 to $100.  Then your insurance company will be completely out of the loop.

Otherwise, just report it the insurance. Even the rise in the rate will not be that much anyway.

    Good Luck...

  10. if u did not call the police u do not own anything.

But if u do file on your insurance it will go up a bit depending on your policy
