My boyfriend turns into a really mean guy when he's half asleep. he doesn't remember it in the morning. help?

my boyfriend will say things to me that are just awful while he's basically asleep. he acts like he's awake and just being a jerk, but he never remembers doing it in the morning.

he's a really nice guy otherwise and i want to figure out a way to snap him out of it at the time, because there doesn't seem to be anything he can do about it.
