I live in the southeast region. We want a herman's but don't want to ship. We also want a certified tort. We would like a baby and we would rescue. Just as long as the drive wasn't too far. We are open to rescuing/adopting. I feel like we are being way too picky and we'll never have a tortoise.

Are we being too picky? Does anyone know of something i can try?

  1. honestly if you want a healthy tortie you should buy one from kingsnake.com....shipping will cost an arm and maybe a leg but at least you know its healthy...i know a bunch of local breeders but i live in texas.

  2. A 'certified' tortoise? There is not a national program for certification in the US, although perhaps you mean legal, captive-bred?

Adoption is always a great option, but it is very, very rare to find a baby tortoise for adoption, very rare to find a tortoise for adoption, fairly rare to find a Hermann's for adoption, and rare to find an adoption program that will adopt out to first-timers (which I am assuming based on your post, but may be very wrong).

In my opinion, you are not being picky, but you may be unrealistic. When you adopt ANYTHING, you just don't get as many choices.

  3. The whole plan sounds perfectly reasonable and fine.  I see no problems.

  4. Adoption is the way to go!  You would be helping one find a much needed home.  Herman's aren't that easy to get in the US.  You might consider a Greek or Russian.  Russians are fairly easy to adopt from rescues.  I have six Russians, and they are wonderful little tortoises with a lot of personality!  Here is a link to some rescues in the US.

Good luck to you and your future tort!  :)
