Question:

My boys were given bunk beds that have a cowboy motif that I do not really like. I want to paint them

The beds have pictures painted on them such as toll painting, tree horse, badge, barbed wire. This is not my style, but like the style of the beds and they were free. I want to paint or stain them but do not know if I can just prime and paint or if I should sand them down. I want to paint them green or orange. We are a bit modern and the cowboy theme just does not fit into our design style. Any tips or answers

  1. Actually you need to identify what type of surface is on the bed. Is it solid wood?  If so, then sanding and re-painting will work.  If it is a veneer paper (i.e. look-alike wood) then you might have to peel it off.  Typically this means that it will be pressboard or fiberboard underneath which will stain pretty well but be a little rough for painting.  Is it a form of plastic or fiberglass, then you can buy special paint that will adhere to this but you may need to prime with Kilz or something similar to ensure it adheres well.

If you like modern looks an easy way to add some flair is to paint or stain the entire piece, let dry and then use painter's tape to outline shapes or lines so you can paint a different color on top.

  2. Sand them first.  You need to sand off the protective clear coat that I am sure is on there now.  Make sure you sand down the details that are on there now, because if you don't you will still be able to see the shape/outline through the new paint.  Then you need to prime then you can paint it.

I'm sure it will look great.  Have fun!

  3. You can paint them .First lightly sand the bed.Apply a good primer and you can use a good enamel paint for a top coat
