Question:

My brake lights wont turn off?

I have a '89 CRX. The brake lights wont turn off. I removed a cable from the battery so the car wont die, does anyone know why they wont turn off? Could this be a problem with a fuse? You'd think they wouldn't turn on if it was a problem with a fuse, but I can't think of what else it might be.

Yes my lights are turned off, and my parking brake is disengaged. Can someone give me some help please?

  1. Another solution to the bad switch could be a bad ground, or broken wire in the circuit. I see this from time to time, so be sure to check all the wires for cracking and or damage.

  2. Take your foot off the brake. j/k I'm sorry I just had to say it.  Try replacing the relay....or try reconnecting the battery cable to see if it cleared up by not being powered.

  3. sounds like the brake lamp switch is out of adjustment. you can find it just above the brake pedal lever, look up and see if you can not find a switch with two wires to it.

  4. Your brake light switch or sender unit is sticking "on" - i.e. not disengaging when you release the brake. Find it, clean off any corrosiion/dirt and spray it with WD-40, CRC or similar. Or replace.

  5. On your brake pedal there is an arm that goes from the pedal up under your dash. Connected to a bracket close to that brake pedal arm is a switch that controls your brake lights... that switch is bad and stuck in the on position. Any auto parts store will carry that switch at a nominal price. Its about a 20 to 30 minute repair.

  6. there is a small sensor that is activated by the brake peddle. its stuck or broken check it out.

  7. I'm assuming that all cars are more or less the same but where your brake pedal is behind that should be a button the break pedal arm hits when you put your foot on the brake which pushes the button in which then turns on your brake lights, just check to see if the button is not stuck in, if it is try using wd40 on it to free it up and get it moving freely again.  hope this helps

  8. The little rubber plug has fallen out of the brake pedal arm, look were the switch contacts the pedal, see the little hole ?
