Ok so 4 months ago I had my brakes changed about a week later they started making noise again. My husband told me its probably a film on the brake pads and would go away. The squeal wouldn't go away so I took it back to the shop that did them and they said nothing was wrong with them and they only heard a slight squeal. But the squeal is so loud now I wont drive with my windows down. For the first 5-10 minutes I drive the car each day they seem fine though. I'm not a heavy or hard breaker. Can anyone give me reasons why its like this? I have a 2003 durango if that matters.

  1. could be brake dust.  especially if you live near a gravel road or some place that would have a decent amount of dust.

  2. HI

When they installed the new brakes there should have been ether a pad or some goop they should have put on the back of one of the pads (in-er or out-er I don't remember)  that stops this from happen.  My bet is they didn't do this step. Have them go for a ride with you driving so they can see what you are talking about. New brakes shouldn't squeal.

    good luck

  3. most of the time its rust or dirt you can scrape the edges or rotor where the brake pad rest sometimes wil do it you can change brake pads to another brand type.. you can also remove pads and sandpaper them sometimes.. brakes are easy  my wife and i do ours at home about 50 bucks.. once you know how they work.. a lot depends on the type of pads that was used and how they was put on some type do squeal more than others.. easy to check and do at home

  4. I am a mechanic and I deal with this all the time.  The reason brakes squeal is vibration.  When these metals vibrate it is like a loud tuning fork and can be pretty anoying.  Brake pads require a paste that is applied to the REAR side of the pads that absorb the vibration and therefore eliminate the squeal.

Some shops either don't use the paste or don't use enough, knowing

that the vibration will appear in weeks or months and probably bring you back for more service, will sell you other brakes or rotors $$$$$.

You can't feel this vibration but that is what it is, and that's why is makes the loud squeal sound.  It is the same concept of rubbing your finger on a crystal glass, the vibration makes a squeal.

You should be able to have the shop reapply the paste (Called disk brake quiet)
