My brakes make a high pitched sound when I apply them.?

When ever I apply pressure to the brakes I get a high pitched whistle like sound? Where should I start troubleshooting?

  1. jtexas is correct but it could also be...

    Defective pads/shoes (pads are on the front, shoes on the rear). This can include cracking and uneven wear.

    It can also be the result of a bad seat between the pads and the caliper, which can be fixed by adding a brake squeal compound to the back of the pads and reinstalling.

    If you aren't sure how to visually check your braking system, you should take it to a qualified mechanic.

  3. usually, that's your signal to get the brake pads replaced...they typically have a "wear indicator" built in (small piece of some kind of material that makes a noice without actually causing damage).

  4. hi... the noise you hear is the wear sensor attached to one of the brake pads indicating its getting thin.  start by checking the pads visually and determine the thickness of the brake pads . if its about an eight of an inch, dont wait any longer. get it done.
