Question:

My brakes squeak at low speeds. Why? Should I take my car into the shop?

My brakes make the high pitched squeak only when I'm going less than 10 MPH or so. I drive a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. It has disk brakes in the front and drum brakes in the back. I think the squeak only comes from the front.

  1. low brake pad lining indicator noise , time for brakes.

  2. I would take it to the shop and have them put it in the air so you can look at it. They normally do this for free. You probably have some worn rotors.

  3. The brake pads have a piece of metal that will touch the rotor when the pads wear out, telling you it's time to replace the pads. If you wait too long, the rest of the pads will wear off and you will have metal on metal braking. When this happens, you may have already worn the rotors out beyond repair.

  4. Could be low brake linings or brake dust build up. Replace worn bits or clean the brakes with a brake cleaner.
