Question:

My brother came out today?

I'm the youngest (21 years old) out of 9 kids. He's 27 and has been with his boyfriend for 4 years now. Today we had a family dinner and he brought his boyfriend and come out to the family. Everyone got really mad and angry when he came out and pretty much left. I'm also g*y & came out a year ago and they accepted me without any problems. This really hurt me to see them treat him like this when they accepted the fact that I'm g*y almost right away. Out of all of my family I expected my parents to be there for him but instead they told him to get out of the house and not to come back anytime soon. I then got in a argument with my parents and they called the cops on me. How can I get them to accept my brother like they did when I came out?

  1. Wow, what h**l of a dinner you all had, don't get me wrong...but perhaps your parents didn't expect to hear that kind of news from your brother, and they were in shock.

Just give them some time to swallow and digest the news, you'll see they'll come around and accept the fact that their son is g*y.  Perhaps when you told your parents they were in a different "state of mind"  and it was easier for them to accept you that way, besides...I think is more like a "double standard", it's more "acceptable" a woman being g*y than a man being g*y....I really don't know why...but that's how it is.

Just be patient, you'll see how fast your parents will accept your brother. Good Luck!

  2. You cannot do anything about it. Your parents should be ashamed of their behavior. Be there for your brother, he needs you.

  3. You can't get them to except him. They have to want to! They shouldn't of been mad if they didn't get mad at you. Do you think he kept it in for too long? They may be upset b/c they have 2 g**s sons instead of one! Maybe one was all they could take! Good luck with your family!

  4. And why is this in the Pregnancy section?

  5. The worst of it may be over.  Sometimes people just don't like to be taken by surprise.  Maybe that's all that it was.  At least your brother's out now and that's probably the hardest part.  Your family can go about mending fences now.  You should not pressure your family into acceptance any more than you yourself would like to be pressured into being straight.  Give them time.  Try to stay positive and try to keep lines of communication open.  Take baby steps.  It sounds like they love you and your brother and they will eventually come around.  Just don't be in their face about it.

  6. probably the shock of finding out. They will come around

  7. Did they except your coming out straight away or did they take some time?

It wouldn't be easy for any parent to except a 'different' lifestyle choice for there child so quickly.

If they excepted your coming out faster perhaps they had an ideas you were g*y before you come out - but maybe not your brother?

Give them time - they will come around cause all parents love their children no matter what!

  8. Thats sad! I'm not sure how you can. Maybe ask them why they are being so hypocritical and once you know why, talk to them about from there. At least your brother has you. Good luck!

  9. well they have to want to accept your brother on their own. i mean, are you a female? because itz easier for them to accept female g**s rather than a man being g*y. but your brother should know that it is his life and parents will eventually come around. they always do. i say give your parents a little time and they will finally accept. how long it will take them, now that i dont know. i can't give you an answer/

  10. Good for him for coming out. Being in the closet sucks (I'm still stuck in it). Honestly I think they got mad because he brought his boyfriend. That's generally frowned upon before one is out...you really can't make them accept your brother, but they will do it themselves over time.
