What should he be ready for in boot camp? He is already very fit, so I know he won't have any problems.

  1. Army PT test is a 2 mile run that must be completed in a standard time, varies by age.  Maximum points (100, however you get more points if you exceed the standard), not time, is typically close to 13 min.  Amount of running is boot camp is probably a 3-5 mile run daily.  Best thing for him to work up is running distance 2-3 times a week, sprints and hill (running up a steep hill) 2 times a week and weight training in between, at least two rest days a week.  Strengthening his core with ab workouts will help with his hip flexors which are important in running (also in the situp event).  Pushups are obviously part of the PT test and recruits will get to do plenty of those.  One technique we used to do was 20 close hand pushups, 20 regular width pushups, and 20 wide stance pushups 2x daily after a cardio plus strength training. Higher Reps with moderate weight will be the best for that, rather than max weight low rep.  Those "huge" bulky guys typically do not do well with pushups (max score on pushups on the PT test for a young guy is near 80 in 2 minutes)  Make sure he is working on flexibility (stretching) also.  The manual for Army Physical Fitness is FM 21-20, he can google it and pull up the excercises and regulations of the Army.

  2. To be honest, when you join the Army, unless you mentally set your mind to absolutely hate running you will grown to love running because that's the only thing he will do. That's how army men get put in shape.

  3. What's wrong?  He can't get a job or doesn't like school?

What could be more disgusting than joining the army, especially now?  It's totally irresponsible.  He's the reason why 9/11 happened.  Too many soldiers around the world messing with other people's lives.

The good thing though is that all these people who think that violence is an answer will of course reap what they sow.

  4. 2 miles in appox. 15mins

  5. too many to count. the ARMY runs every day for thier whole careers pretty much. I see them every day running. I share a base with them.

  6. If he runs hard now, he will be ok

  7. The PT Test is two miles, but once he is assigned to a permanent unit ,it could be 2 to 5 miles. It matters what the commander wants.

  8. estimation is not as reliable as a reliable experiment would be.

  9. Um my brothers joined the Army too. And there Sergeant had them run 5-10 miles I think =) They also have to be able to do 50 push ups, and I think 75 curl ups/or crunches in a 2 or 3 minute period of time.

  10. It'll vary from company to company. Do you mean how many at P.T.? How many total, or minimum standards?

I guestimate he'll run 75 to 100 miles total in basic training. AIT will depend on what job he's training for.

      At P.T. I'd figure on 1mile a day;  minimum. 5miles at p.t. get's common later in training
