  1. Thank him for his service to our great country. All us patriots that have worn a uniform thank him.Give him a good supply of stamps ,so he can write home every evening.GOD BLESS.

  2. A shaving kit works. Anything else will be sent home with his personal clothing. Basic training is intense and there's little time for anything else.

  3. I know in the Marines they seize everything as contraband except for your ID and important papers your better off just getting him something when he graduates like a small tv or something like that for his barracks room.

  4. A new watch.  I had a cheap watch for basic training.  I can't stand going without a watch but didn't want a good one to get stolen.

  5. I served in the Air Force for 4 years as an officer. I have also prepared my cousin for the Navy. In fact, he left last week for Basic. Each branch is slightly different in what they do and don't allow. He is not permitted any electronic devices, such as cell phones and iPods. He is allowed only what is absolutely necessary to survive. If he takes anything not on his list, it will be confiscated. Your brother is not allowed anything that can be used for fun. The only books he can have is a Bible and his U.S. Navy manual. He can ask his Naval Recruiter for the DEPA manual, which will help to prepare him. It will outline what is expected and what he is allowed to take to Basic.

  6. How about a watch? It's about the only thing that they let you keep of your own during training, and if you get something like a Timex Ironman, he'll be able to use it to time his running and learn military time.
