Question:

My brothers horse just ate mums budgie?

my mum always lets her budgie out on her shoulder while she's doing work in the yard (his wings are clipped) she's had for 5 years or so...anyway, she was in the paddock picking up mushrooms and Teddy my brother gelding was following her around like he always does, then my mum heard a squawk (the budgie was on her shoulder) and she turned around and teddy had it in his mouth. mum's devastated.

The horse didn't eat him, more just chewed him....but he's dead at any rate. so my question is why would teddy do this, after years of knowing Johnson (that's the budgies name), why would he suddenly eat him (for want of a better word)?

ps i think Americans call budgies parakeets, just so you guys know what i'm talking about

  1. Maybe Teddy had a flash of madness, and just took a swipe at Johnson? I expect your Mum is very upset, usually horses don't bother at all with birds do they?

Our pony share his stable with a swift in Summer and a robin in winter, we have photos of them looking out the door together, horse sticking his head out, pulling on a hay net, Robin sat on the top of the door.

  2. Horsefeathers!

  3. ....

    ur kidding, right?

  4. I'm guessing that Teddy thought that Johnson

    was flipping him the "bird"

(that's what we showing someone your middle finger a sign for "F--- you")

  5. no idea! horses are known to nip, but are not carnivores by any means; and especially to nip it off it's owners shoulder?! Poor budgie =(

  6. That's weired! but that's the way it is in the wild animal world  But i feel sorry 4 the poor budgie!!! :(    But in the wild he would of just flu away!!!!! Tell your mum i send my sympathy!

  7. As much as this horse may have appeared to have liked this budgie, it doesn't mean the budgie is safe when around this horse. This is what happens ; the large attack the small, pretty much. Even domesticated animals are not truly domesticated, they still have a wild side to them and natrual instincts.

It does suprise me that this horse went for a budgie though, or any animal like that. Horses do not eat meat, none at all. They are strictly 'vegetarian' and will not find any type of meat appearling ; if they were too actually swallow some meat, they could actually get sick. Though from what you are describing, this horse did not actually swallow the budgie, just chewed. This is a little abnormal, but nothing to worry about.

So basically, there is nothing you can do. Keep budgies or any smaller animals like this away from this horse, but do not think this horse is bad behaved out dangerous. I'm sorry for your loss of this budgie, my deepest sympathy to you and your mother.

  8. idk

  9. Whoever doesn't believe this story, you're in for a surprise.

My mom found my son's horse with a dead pigeon hanging out of her mouth. It's anybody's guess how it got there, but it was there, nonetheless.

Teddy's had it in for that bird for a while. Everyone knows horses can "plot".

  10. This is what happens in the animal kingdom.  The large attack the small.  By clipping the bird's wings, nature was compromised, and he didn't have a chance.

  11. I'm guessing he was 'checking him out' like they do...with their mouths...and poor Johnson couldn't take that.

Or looking for something to 'play' with.

I don't think the horse was being mean...just curious and 'playing' with something different.

Ugh...bummer.  I'm sorry for your mom's loss.  Really...whether it's a horse, dog, cat, or a bird...we give our hearts to our animals and it hurts when we lose them...

  12. Wow. I would have no clue... and especially after the horse and the budgie had previously interacted. I have no idea...

  13. what the

  14. what colour was he was he green and apple shape smelling like seeds/fruit? dose he mouth a lot of things, my horse nipped my dog but hes never nipped me. I suspected he was jealous.

  15. Maybe the budgie smelt like seeds and the horse thought he was edible?

  16. He was probably trying to play or being curious.  I am sure he did not mean to hurt your moms budgie. A horse is a lot bigger and probably didn't realize how easily he could hurt the budgie.  Poor birdie :*o(

  17. I have a curious pony who tries things out by putting them in his mouth; this has included l*****g a cat, trying to pull the tail feathers out of a peacock etc. Probably, this is what your brother's horse was trying to do. Just got curious. Poor bird though.
