My brushes are not turning. We checked the gear...

Question

Since my husband used the small handle which is attached to the motor to clean mattresses, stairs etc...., the brushes are no longer turning. He put the standard back on, as usual and the brushes will not spin. He checked the gear and it is spinning, but once belt is placed back on, the brushes won't spin. Help!
