  1. WOW, nice friend.  You'll have a nice gift for him when he comes back... a wrecked R1.  Ask another buddy with a 600 or smaller bike.  If you do decide to go against the advice of most of the people that are going to answer this question, please don't do anything stupid on it.  And yeah, you are insane to use that as your first bike.

  2. The race is on to see who lives the longest, you on the R1 or your buddy in Iraq.

    don't do it.

Start slow and respect the dangers of riding.

    Good Luck...

  3. If you dont kill your self, he will when he sees what you have done to it.

Uses a storage fuel additive, and put it away until he gets back

  4. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE THAT AS YOUR FIRST BIKE.

Other people will tell you to get a 250/500 and ride it for a year. I dont think thats completely neccessary. But seriously, im not kidding, you'll wreck on that, and your gonna have one pissed off friend, and a messed up bike. Do this, go get a 250/500 (250's are real cheap), and ride it for 2-3 months. Then take that baby out. In all honesty, it really would take over a year (or a few years), to be prepared to ride that baby, but we all give into temptation, and it would just be wreckless to ride a bike like that as a first timer. I'm a first time rider myself and im getting a 500-600cc sportsbike. I am skipping the 250 since I took a MSF course (which you should take, by the way), and I wont have a chance to upgrade. Nor will I be going 100+ on the interstate, I know my limits. Please, listen to others on here and dont let your friend get you hurt, or much much worse.

  5. your buddy is really smart............  teaching you how to ride & giving you his bike to wreck...  but dont worry about throwing it down the road...  theres a fair chance you will kill yourself ...  so you wont even have to tell him you wrote it off..

go & do  a  safety course..  buy a cheap 250 to learn on..  & in 3 months time trade it in on a 500 to 750 cc bike.. ride that for 6 months & then  take your mates bike for a spin....

Im guessing if you have any brains you will know enough by then to realize that its still to much for you...

but go get your bike licence... they are great fun....

just remember that a lot of the time, its the car that dosnt see you that will ruin your day....

  6. have fun!!

  7. Anybody can start on any bike. With an R1 it is a little more difficult to recover from mistakes as compared to an R6 or smaller CC bike. You can be successful if you keep a cool head and don't try to be a show off. The odds are against you but it's not impossible. if you listen to people on Y!A, even a 600 isn't suitable to start on. that's bull because the first bike I ever touched was a 600 Ninja and I jumped on and rode it home 100 miles on the interstate with no practice or course. Now I wouldn't recommend that for you but I'm making a point that it's up to the rider and how mature he or she is.

Get plenty of practice in an empty parking lot or some area with no traffic. Bikes aren't dangerous, just the people with little experience and no regard.

You may want to see about taking a weekend MSF course.
