Question:

My budgie just died!!!!?

We have 3 budgies. This morning, we found one of our budgies on the floor near the food bowl. It died in the corner and it was so sad. I was just wandering what I should do to remember her. I don't know where to bury her. Her flock seems very happy still. She was blue and white. She was a very happy and entertaining budgie.

Here are some questions I want to ask:

When does the budgie start to smell?

Where should I bury her?

Should I buy a new one?

How did it die? ( It wasn't because of the food)

Thanks

I miss her so much

  1. It won't start smelling right away, but until you decide what to do with your little baby you can put her in a box and place it in the freezer, sad I know....but it'll buy you the time you need to figure out exactly what you want to do.  You can bury her in your back yard under a tree or pretty flowering bush. You could also cremate her, I do it to my pets.  Buying a new one is your choice and yours alone, but I'd give your other birds some time to adjust to the group change before you add another one.  As far as why she died, there's no real way for us to know.

  2. Take the body to the vet for a necropsy; that's the only way to determine what killed her and whether or not your other budgies could have the same thing (just because a bird acts healthy doesn't always mean it is; they are very good at hiding illness).  Getting the rest of them vet-checked is also an important thing to do, as is disinfecting the cage and everything in it.

As for remembering her, have a nice ceremony, write a poem, whatever you feel in your heart would be the way to honor her.  Don't feel pressured to get another budgie; you'll do that when you know you're ready, and that could be a short time or a long time; it's not for anyone to decide.  You'll just know it.

  3. It's impossible to tell how it died without being there. It could easily have been sick, but just hid the symptoms from you. Most birds will do that, and they are very good at it, because in the wild the rest of the flock would kick them out if they showed signs of being sick.

I would clean and disinfect the cage and perches and everything very thoroughly to make sure you get rid of any germs that might be there, for the sake of your other birds. Also consider taking them to a vet to make sure they don't have any kind of parasites or lurking illnesses.

I wouldn't really recommend buying another bird right away--your other two can keep each other company, at least for the time being. If you do decide to get a new bird, you want to make sure the birds you still have aren't sick before you introduce a new friend.

I've never kept a dead animal around long enough for it to start to smell. But when my first cockatiel died, I buried him in my garden, beneath this pretty piece of marble. Maybe you can bury your budgie in your garden, where he will be surrounded by colorful flowers? It is a nice place to remember a lost pet. You could use a concrete marker, a special flower, a pretty rock, or even a ceramic bird to mark his grave. Or if you don't have a place to bury him (say, if you live in an apartment), you may be able to have him cremated.

  4. i had a blue and white one that died too, my girlfriend named it "sweetie" and also a yellow and blue one named "sunshine", and we still dont know why they died. they were too young for it to be old age but they did seem kinda quiet right before they died so they must have been sick only we didnt know until it was too late. we also have 2 other blue and white ones, patches and chester, who are still kickin', we had to get chester (he came with that name) from a friend since patches was lonely when he lost his other two buddies. we buried the other ones in the yard. the other answerer is right about putting her in the freezer until you can decide how/were to bury her. best wishes.

  5. i had a blue and white one too it was named joshua ands he died too. i was very sad. both probably died because they can get easily sick. it could also be a disease from another bird which it caught. i burried it under a tree in my yard. it used to have its cage hang there by a rope. in spring the flowers from the tree fall onto it and it looks nice. i bougt a new one because i only had two and the alive one got lonely and i felt sorry for it.

  6. put her in a little box and bury her deep in your garden and put a potplant ontop.  Birds dont live a long time like people so it isnt important how she died but it is important that she has you to take care of her final resting place. Buy a new one when you feel you want to.  If you miss something it means you are a kind caring and precious person.  Good luck and dont be too sad as this is life and she will know you loved her.

  7. I am so sorry for your loss.  I have 7 parakeets of my own.

I would think that it might be best to remove the bird you lost as soon as you can.  I realize that the remainder of the birds are "calm" but it might be best for the group to start become accustomed to it being absent.  Also, just in case the bird died from causes other than "old age", it would be safer for the other birds not have the deceased bird in the cage with them.

Do you have a place that you could bury her??Perhaps in a garden or another place nice??

I would not get a new bird to join the flock.  If you have had them a while, it would be unwise to add another, younger bird into the group.

You didn't mention how long you had her and we can only guess as to the manner in which she passed.  Here is some information that I got from the source listed below...

What is average life span of a budgie?

The average lifespan of a budgie is generally 2-7 years. There are budgies that have lived to 13 and ever older, and there are budgies that die before their first birthday. There are many factors that can affect the lifespan on a budgie. American budgies generally live longer that English budgies, and breeding budgies often have shorter lives than those who never raise chicks. Many budgies die from natural causes like tumors (Budgies unfortunately are very susceptible to them), and many budgies die from dangers and accidents that could have been prevented.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss...

  8. maybe you should bury her near some blue and white flowers cause that was it's colour. about 3 of our budgie's have died and people have been saying that they have died because of the cold whether. we have blankets over the cages but it still didn't help. so we asked the pet shop and they said to put a thick blanket over the cage from where the direction of the wind comes in and just get a normal lamp and point it on the stick that they sleep/sit on. it really worked for us. I'm sorry about yours.

  9. sorry about your budgie : (

    ...but, whats a budgie?

  10. 1. It dosent smell when its underground.

    2. You should bury her near some flowers or somewhere where you always look and you think happy thoughts.

    3. Don`t buy a new one, It will only make you miss that one even more.

    4. I think it died maybe because of old age, or it got into a fight with another budgie and somehow was injured.

I fell so sorry for you, hope you get better!

  11. I would bury her somewhere in your garden. You could make a little cross if it helped. plant a flower in your garden to remember her by.

  12. I don't know about the odor. I have always promptly removed a bird that has passed away.

Most people bury them in the ground, nice and deep so nothing can dig it up. I have had 2 very special birds of mine cremated and they are in beautiful urns. It costs a LOT.

No, she could of been ill. You need to disinfect the cages, toys and food cups. The other birds will need to be screened for diseases or illness.

Have no idea how or why it died. Toxic fumes/Teflon pans or illness are the main causes. Autopsy will be able to confirm the reason of death 100%. Might be a good idea to have that done so you will know if you need to treat your other birds or not.

If you get a new bird it will also have to be screened for illness or parasites before you introduce it to your other birds. often a short quarantine period is recommended & do not put the new bird into the cage with the established birds. Territory issues will arise. Place the bird in it's own cage next to the other birds. They will get to know each other and will be more likely to accept the new bird. You will be able to tell when they all can share a cage they will be very friendly with each other.

Sorry you are sad. The above is only helpful tips and possible suggestions to think about.....Just trying to help.

  13. It sounds like it possibly was injured or maybe she was egg bound. She could have also had a disease.

You must now watch your other budgies very carefully for any signs of sickness in case she did die of a disease that they might now have. If you do see any signs of this disease (heavy breathing, tail bobbing, eating less etc) then take them to the vet straight away.

They sound healthy enough now but do keep an eye on them, birds are very good at hiding sickness.

  14. Sorry to hear about your budgie, I have lost a couple of birds and they are buried in our back garden near some flowers. One cause of death might have been a stroke i heard it can be common with birds also stress of some kind can do it as well.

  15. my condolonces..from me. My parakeet Spreckles says he is sorry. losing a fellow parakeet is heartbreaking. my other one flew away. keep one of her feathers and save it in your album. plant her next to a flower. that pretty flower will remind you that her life will always blossom. write her a poem and send it to a website. they smell after 3 days. buy one when u want to. maybe it was old age or she was sick. it is sad losing a cute little parakeet. sorry for the loss. = (

                                                     sincerely,

                                          Spreckles and me

p.s- your birdie is chirping from bird heaven.
