Question:

My calves are so sore I can't walk right?

I recently came back to college and am not used to walking up hills the way I have to here. My car is four blocks up a hill so walking to and from it is tedious, plus pretty much everything is up some kind of hill. My calves hurt so bad that when I sit down for over 5 minutes and then stand to walk, I have to waddle a little bit. My butt muscles (haha) and my upper legs hurt a little, but nowhere near this much. What are some good stretches I can do to relieve this pain until I get used to all this hiking?

  1. Stretch it out-- GENTLY! Also, try using a heat pad or a muscle relaxer!

  2. flex the sore muscles a lot. try sitting on the floor with your feet out in front of you and touching your toes, or putting your hands and feet on the ground with your butt up in the air and push the heel of one foot to the floor with the other foot, and then switch. but the more you use the muscles that are sore, the faster the soreness will go away.
