I had just had my clutch and flywheel replaced. after about 25 miles I started hearing soft rumbling and rattling noises followed by very hard shifts and idling, now my car cant even stay on. is this a problem with the transmission, the fuel or the electrical system? the car in question is an 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat 2.8L V6

  1. Sounds like u got a poor clutch job..Sorry 2 say, historically VWs have had alot of problems.

  2. I'm sure you suspect a problem with the job that was just done on your car.  I would, too.  If the clutch were dragging, it could cause the engine to bogg and maybe die.  Who knows?

If you trust the shop that did the job, go back to them and don't let them charge you unless they can prove it had nothing to do with their work.  OR, you can go to a dealership and if THEY can prove that it was likely caused by the person who did the job, you can then take that invoice to the original shop and ask them to pay for it.

  3. Get a new car

  4. This sounds like an un-balanced flywheel...   which is rare. But it happens. Because it's spinning and it weighs so much, the weight distribution must be accurate to within hundredths of a gram. (there's a TON of force on that thing when it's spinning.

But factory flaws on those type of parts are rare. What isn't so rare is a rush-job on bolting the flywheel back onto the crank-shaft, which could result in a stripped, cross threaded or still-not-fully-tightened flywheel bolt.

I'd tow your vehicle to a VW dealer for a trouble-shoot before you go any further. In this case, the high-priced shop rate might be worth it. And if the root cause was due to the work you had done recently, and if you can prove it, the other shop would have to re-imburse you for your VW dealer bills.
