My car has lost power but not sure why....

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with 150,000 miles on it. I take care of this car very well and changed the oil regulary, give it tune ups, on a regular basis, etc. However, during the past 2-3 months, I have noticed a drop in horse power and it doesnt seem to have the power it once did. I drive about 24 miles to work each way and usually got around 33-36 miles per gallon but now I get about 26-28. I took it to the garage and got another tune up and he changed the oxygen sensor (whatever that does) but it still seems to lack the horsepower it once had. This car struggles to stay around 55-60 during my daily commute and really struggles to go up hills. Before I take it to the shop again and drop $200-300 dollars again, does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Please help! Thanks.

  1. This could be MANY, MANY, MANY things. I can type a whole list of stuff that could potentially cause this. This sounds like it might be the spark plugs, that is usually the first thing that causes this Next I would take a look at the exhaust and intake. There could easily be a blockage in there. the car has a lot of miles on it, give it the regular maintenance and love it needs and it will just keep going. Call a mechanic and ask him what you should do, that is free, unless he is a butt head and doesnt want to share any info ith you unless you pay him. In fact, call the local Toyota dealer, tell them you bought the car there or something and would like to speak with a Mechanic. The Toyota dealer should be able to spot the problem dead-on. Also, have you checked to see if there are any recalls on any parts?

  2. Have a compression check done, change the fuel filter, if you have fuel injection put some cleaner in the tank. you can get it for cheap at any auto parts store. The compression check will tell you if the rings are ok and if the valves are seating properly.Have the timing checked too.

  3. Have you had the timing belt replaced? It sounds to me that the timing might be off.

  4. This can be very simple, have you tried checking your air filter?what about your fuel filter?and also your injectors could be gunked.can go buy a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and put it in your gas tank.

  5. Due to the gas change with the ethenol in it it might just need a new fuel filter.

  6. my advice give it a overhaul !!!

  7. Catalytic converter's clogging up.  You just described what happened to me - barely hold cruising speed, lumbering lethergically up hills.  Change it out and you should be right as rain.

  8. Change your catalytic converter.  It is clogged.  Do you notice a stange odor when you are traveling?  Hear is one way to check to see if it bad.  Can you see it if you just look under your car or is it hidden?  Locate where they are and at night take it for a little ride just enough to get the engine good and hot.  Then stop and look under your car and if you can see your converter glowing a pretty bright orange/red, it would be my guess that it need replaced.

  9. ITS BROKE?
