It's in perfect shape as far as we know, but my dad is skeptical as to whether it could make the trip. It's 1000 miles each way. what do you think?

  1. if it's been meticulously maintained i see no reason why not, it's only 9 years old. It would be very smart to have it checked over by a mechanic before you go and ensure you have antifreeze, coolant, oil, air, all that stuff in working order.

  2. I have a van with 193,000 miles and have no reason to believe why it wouldn't make such a trip. With 147,000 miles on your car means you have taken care of it so there would be no reason why it won't make the trip. I have a car with less than 4,000 miles and how do I know it would make such a trip... just remember that anything mechanical can break at any time making no difference if it has 4,000, 40,000 or 400,000 miles on it.

  3. Sure, one way or the other.  Under its own power, or hooked to the tow truck.

  4. I have taken cars in on trade with over 300,000 miles on them.  I have a van right now with 258,000 miles that I took on trade from a luxury cab company, I would drive it anywhere in the country without hesitation, I also have a 2002 Ford Ranger with 96,000 miles on it that was owned by a young punk who rolled it in a ditch, I wouldn't drive it 10 miles.

What I'm getting at is miles don't matter as much as condition, if you are skeptical have it looked at by a good mechanic.  Tell them to give your car a full inspection and tell you what is wrong.  Tell them not to fix, just inspect.  You will get a good idea this way what/if you should worry about anything.  An avenger wouldn't be my first pick in reliability but hey it's what you've got so what can you do.  1,000 miles one way on the interstate is not really that hard on a car at all.  200 miles thru Big City traffic is much worse.
