My car is idle at 500 revs and cuts out

my mechanic told me to spray carb cleaner which i have done, still sitting at 500 revs is this normal, if not how can i fix it?

it's a cavalier gls 16v

  1. What about adjusting the idle cable a bit? Assuming it has one of course...


  2. Not sure, but your mechanic is a prat. Your car has fuel injection, not a carburettor.

  4. Yes the carb cleaner was right thing to do. That would clean out any carbon in the intake & also in the injectors.

    It needs to be checked for any air leaks on the intake. This needs a mechanic.

  5. perhaps the mechanic was trying to give you a trick to locate a vacuum leak. with the engine running, spray carb cleaner to locate the leak, then you fix the leak.
