I drive a 1996 Buick Century, and when I brake I hear a scraping noise. What is it? Is the car okay to drive for now? It used to only do it when I reversed and braked but now it's doing it no matter what as long as I brake. I didn't hit a pothole or anything, it just started doing this.

  1. You need to change your brake pads.

There is a metallic layer on your brake pads that indicates, by sound, that the brake pads\shoes need changing.

  2. Your brakes are worn out. You can still drive it but the longer you do the more damage will be done to the rotors. Get them replaced as soon as you can.

  3. it is possible the brake pads or shoes are worn to a point where the coating for the brakes pads is gone and now the rotor or drums are rubbing metal from shoes or pads. Get it repaired asap. The repairs become more costly if drum/rotors are damaged.

  4. You need to get some brake repair done. it sounds like they are worn out.

  5. You may need new bake pad, need to have them checked now before it will cost you new rotos.

  6. Depending on where the noise is coming from it sounds like you need new brake pads or shoes...and the pads or shoes may have damaged the rotors or drums...i wouldn't put it off for to long because the scraping means that there is metal on metal and know more friction material left which seriously reduces your braking systems performance...if you can handle it yourself get in there...if not get it to a reputable shop soon...Good Luck
