the tach meter spikes up, and i have to coast, and shut down the car to get it to stop. when it jerks, it really jerks. it feels like i slammed the brakes. Its a 95 Mercury Mystique with around 100,000 miles. I checked the transmission fluid, and its fine.. i was told to try changing the fluid and checking the filters..? any ideas or input?

  1. Filters?

Bad air filter can cause hesitation, and a poor fuel filter can cause erratic acceleration. I would try those before checking the fuel pump.

A transmission can be bad, and still hold its fluid. A proper fluid level is good, but not an indicator, or proof of a well running transmission.
