My car makes a strange humming sound when I turn...What is the problem?

And it only makes this sound when I'm driving slow and I turn (it's especially noticeable when I'm not moving and I turn the wheel). It's hard to explain the sound. It just feels like the car is struggling when it turns.

Does my car need more steering fluid?

Thanks a ton for all your answers!!!

  1. first I would check the power steering fluid , if its low put some in BUT DONT OVER FILL because the pressure will blow the gasket out of the power steering pump, then youll have to replace that. but if it is low you may want to see if your pump or lines are leaking because if you just keep filling it it will corrode and just get worse. so i could turn serious if ignored. if your fluid is not low and its still doing it. your power steering pump could just be going out. which depending on the make model year could determine the cost. good luck hope this helps.

  2. "Low Fluid" But the Humming is Air In the System! Check for a leak at the Pump Steering Gear/Rack-n-Pinion. IE; Bad Seals!

  3. thats your power steering pump

  4. IF I WAS YOU I WOULD GO AND GET A NEW POWER STEERING PUMP AND THEN YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO WORRY BOUT THE NOISE ANY MORE. YOUR POWER STEERING PUMP IS GOING OUT ON YOUR CAR.

  5. it could be number of things, but i'd check the power steering fluid and/or before looking anywhere else

  6. Yes... That's what my dad's car does when it needs more steering fluid!

  7. yep thats what ours does when it needs it

    Good Luck
