My car stereo won't play CDs? ?

The CD player in my car was working fine up until last week. I was listening to a CD, turned the volume way down to talk to the attendant in a parking garage, and when I turned the volume back up, nothing would play anymore. It sounds like really horrible static, even though it's a CD. You can kind of hear what song it is, but it sounds like it's on a station you can hardly pick up. The radio however, works just fine. Any ideas? Would it be worth it to buy a cleaning CD? The car is a 2001 that I bought used just a few months ago, and I'm wondering if it has to do with something the previous owner did. i would try the cleaning disk but there may be a problem with the deck
