  1. Your tax hasn't run out today. It will run out on Monday. If you havnt got your new car by then, if you intend to use your current car then you will need to tax it. The law says so.

  2. If you are not going to be using the car after Monday, and it will be parked on private property, not on a public street, then you can simply make the SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification) declaration on the form or via the DVLA website.  It's then up to the new owner who buys it from you to renew the tax.

If you need to use the car after Monday though, then legally you are obliged to renew and pay the appropriate fee.   When you sell, you have the choice of leaving the new tax disk in place and making whatever adjustment to the selling price you might see fit to allow for that, or of returning the disk with the appropriate DVLA form to get a refund on the unused portion.  Keep in mind though that refunds are issued only for FULL months, so if you buy a 6-month tax disk now and send it in for a refund two weeks later, you will only be refunded for 5 months.

To Maxwell:  This is the tax which is required of cars used on public roads in the U.K.  You pay for either 6 or 12 months at a time, and are given a circular tax disk about 3 inches in diameter which has to be displayed on the windshield.  It shows the vehicle details, amount paid, and expiry date.    It's more or less the equivalent of the annual stickers used on license plates in American states.

  3. if you are keeping the car then yes if you are  going to part ex the car for your new one then no

  4. I'm in a similar position as you. I'm collecting my new car tomorrow but it is taxed from July so I will have to drive home with no tax on the vehicle avoiding the police!

  5. If you want an answer from the law.....yes of course u still have to tax ur car!!

But from a person...no!! I wouldn't bother, becuase you'll have to pay for 6months at the least so whats the point?! lol....

But if you get pulled over you'll probably still get fined n stuff, coz if you ent got tax then technically your insurance isn't valid!!

  6. It can't possibly run out today, it could only run out on Monday.

In any case, yes you do have to either a) get some new tax, or b) declare SORN, i.e. don't get new tax but fill in a form saying the car will not be kept or used on a public road.

  7. It will sell a h**l of a lot better if you've got it taxed! You don't have to tax your old car if it's not on the road though; as long as you get in touch with the DVLA and register it 'off road' you'll be OK. It won't cost anything to do this.

Not sure if you've got a buyer for your old car yet, but you could just buy 6 months road tax when you know it's sold. It's either that, or just knock the amount off the selling price when someone comes to look at it and they'll be able to sort that side of things out before they drive it anywhere. Don't drive your car without tax though. Just one thing...I'm pretty sure your tax should run out at the end of the month, so you've got til Monday.

    Good luck.

  8. click the link sorn the car then keep it "off the road"

    or they will fine you!!!

    click the link to sorn

  9. If indeed it runs out today, don't drive it tomorrow.  Then you won't be stopped and ticketed.

  10. The UK is weird.

Is this like registration or something??

    Cheers!

  11. How can it run out today? The end of the month's on Monday!

  12. Yes, but when you get your other car, you can get a refund for the road tax from the DVLA.

  13. It cant run out today, it will run out on Monday as that is the end of the month.  If you get a 6 month RT, you can get a refund or transfer it to your new car.  Dont drive without tax.  Its not worth it, as all police cars now run Numberplate Recognition Software and they will pull you if you dont have rt.
