Question:

My car was broken into at the gym tonight... I have a lot of stuff stolen. Do I need receipts for the claim?

I have a homeowners policy through state farm that covers the items stolen from my car. I lost an IPOD, my coach purse and wallet, 6 gift cards to various places, and $400 cash (I had just sold some furniture on craigslist and was planning on taking that cash to the bank later on today). I don't have receipts for any of these items because I actually bought these on craigslist. Will they still reimburse me the money without receipts?

  1. All items need to be listed on the police report. Cash is limited to $200. You buy and store a _lot_ of stuff bought of CL in your car. Seems a little strange. It's a judgment call by the adjuster. If the list gets too long, they may push for reciepts or some other confirmation that the items were purchased (if they were bought recently off CL, they may ask for information on who you bought the items from so they can contact these people. Surely you know where you had to go to buy them). If it's a legit claim, you should be able to provide _some_ information.

  2. the cash you will prolly not be able to claim, however, depending on how much you policy will claim, they will take your word on when you purchased the items that were stolen, and deduct a little money depending on how long you owned/used the item(s)

  3. Probably out of luck

  4. Those gift cards are just like cash, and if you check your policy, you'll see that the limit on cash is like $100.

You're going to HAVE to prove ownership in some way shape or form.  A photo of you holding the purse, a copy of the craigslist ad, a receipt hand written from the person who sold you the purse, etc.

Without ANY receipts, you're going to have a hard time.  Plus, you'll have to exceed that homeowners deductible - and a coach purse & wallet (probably knockoffs, as that's mostly what's sold on Craigslist) and an ipod might not do that.
