  1. If the car was towed...the tow company is charging storage for every day your car sits. In my area its 25 per day. But it is probably more expensive in DC.

    Where were you parked?

If it was a private lot....talk to the owner of the lot and find out if they had cars towed and what company they use. Call that tow company and see if they have your car. If they don't have your car - ask if they know of anyone else that could have towed it (and what their phone number is).

If it was on the street - contact the city or parking authority- or police (which ever is appropriate)  and find out if they towed your car.  If they don't have your car- again- see if they have any suggestions on who may have towed it.

Any one you call will need the year, make, model and VIN (vehicle identification number) for your car. Some may be able to search by a plate number. So have this info on hand when you call. They will also need to know where the car was towed from.

If you are behind on any payments....contact your finance co. Make sure it was not picked up by a repo company.

After you have worked the phones and it's pretty clear that the car was not towed and you are sure that it was stolen - then call the police department and file a theft report.

The tow company does not notify the police. They run the registration on the car and eventually notify you. This process can take a couple of weeks. In the mean time, those storage fees are going up every day. And you will have to pay all that plus the tow fee to get your car released.

So if you think its a real possibility that your car was towed...you do better to work the phones and find it.

  2. The tow company doesn't notify the police, it's the other way around

  3. if the vehicle was found to be non payment on a car loan then they have to notify they collected the vehicle,so possible that ur car was stolen,i would notify the insurance company as well see what they say and show police reports

  4. Well first of all the number isn't 311 it's 9-1-1.

    call 911 and tell them.
