  1. most of the time you may keep the totaled vehicle, but if you choose to repair it after it has been totaled you will not be able to insure it again with any company

they only insure the car but you payed for it so yes you should be able to keep the vehicle even though it has been totaled

  2. Normally an insurence company that pays for the total becomes the owner of the vehicle because they paid for it. It has been my experiance that you have to negotiate with the company to buy it back.  In some cases cars that are totaled were only totaled because the cost of repair exceeded the value of the car. (It was cheaper for them to total the car than to fix it) Cars that can be fixed usually have to be (in Washington State anyways) inspected by the State Patrol to insure that it is road worthy to make sure it is road worthy. Your unsurence agent or the agency that paid out for the total should be able to answer the question of sale back to you.  Don't be surprised if they haven't already sold the car for scrap or parts themselves.

  3. same thing happened to me !!! no you dont get to keep the car the insurance pays back the car company if your car isnt fully paid for yet and if it is paid for you get all the money

  4. You can usually "buy back" the car from the insurance company for very little money. Ask about it right away, because they'll just sell the car for scrap as soon as possible.

  5. Catladys right on the money..(cant vote not lvl 2)

  6. If you want to keep the car, you can, but the insurance company will subtract "salvage value" from the payout check.

Talk to your adjuster about how much it will be.  Basically, it will be the amount that THEY think they can sell it, for parts.  Usually, depending on the make & model, it's between $1,000 and $2,000.

  7. You don't get to keep the car because after they total it and pay you for it, it belongs to the insurance company.  You may ask them if you can buy it back from them.  (they really don't want the thing) Ask them how much they want for it and proceed from there
