Question:

My car will still roll if I'm on a bigger hill and I put it into gear. (Man Transmission) Why is that?

Putting the car into gear and shutting off the car, and it still rolls on bigger hills.

  1. Have you tried putting the parking brake on, that's what it's for. You don't rely on the gearbox to hold a car on a hill fcol.

    Also, you should always make sure the wheels are pointing into the kerb, so that if it gets away, or somone hits the back of it, it won't travel too far.


  2. what gear?  if you're pointing up the hill use first, pointing downhill use reverse-  always use the handbrake as well though or you put too much stress on the gears.

  3. Get your d**n parking brake fixed!  Then you won't have that problem.

    If you crank your wheel to the left before turning the engine off, you can at least trust it to roll only until the right front tire hits the curb.  That is of course if you're parked uphill in a left hand drive car.

  4. You put them in reverse to hold them. It doesn't matter if its pointing up hill or down hill. Go ahead and put it in a forward gear like these people say and you can pick it up at the bottom of the hill.
