Question:

My car won't hold a steady idle...?

First a little background information... 2 weeks ago I took my car in for some body work. They called me the very same day I brought it to them saying that the alarm was going off and they couldn't figure out how to shut it off (my alarm is kinda tricky lolz). I gave them some suggestions on how to turn it off and he hung up the phone on me. So last week the body shop called and said that my car was ready, but they had to jump it off that morning.

Now my car will not hold a steady idle. It drives fine but about half the time when I put it into neutral it will die. I took it to Pep Boys and they ran a full diagnostics test on it and the alternator, battery, starter etc. came back good.

Any other things I should have checked out? Also should the body shop be responsible since it was fine before I sent it in or am I footin' the bill?

  1. Change your oxygen sensor.  If your not getting the right mix of oxygen and fuel, youll get a rough idle like that, usually jumping from about 800rpms to 1500-1900 rpms while stopped....Thats in my case because the fuel was too rich....in your case, it might not be mixing enough fuel to keep it running.  Your probabley thinking Im wrong but try it because even though it drives fine, your sensors kick in while idleing only.  And yeah the body shop is supposed to restore it to the same running condition...however that becomes hard to prove considering no one but you knows how the car was running previously.  Also what type of car is it, that might help.

  2. check all the earth to the engine , mabye they disconnected a wire

  3. If you made an insurance claim to get the body work done, getting the engine running like it did before the accident is part of the claim.

By the way, Pep Boys wouldn't have been my first choice for diagnosing an engine problem.

  4. uh i don'y lnow alot about cars sry
