My carpet is shot, so how do I dye it? I want to go from a light color to a darker color. Where do I find dye.

I am looking for the most inexpensive way to update my room. Walls are all white and the carpet is in good shape but looks bad from high traffic areas even after being shampooed. I need ideas from people who know how to pinch pennies.

  1. buy new carpet.  Trust me, it may be more expensive, but financially in the long run it is better.  Plus dye would look so bad.  After 2 weeks you would have to buy new carpet anyway.

  2. you cant dye carpet. Buy a remnant.

  3. Some things are better left to pros, and this is one.  The results will only be as good as what's there already.  Flattened carpet, even stains, will still, probably, be there. Best is to recarpet, or get an inexpensive remnant.

  4. I had installed and cleaned carpet for about 8 years and I've seen it all. Dyed carpet kinda looks alright,  but it's hard to find anyone to do that anymore. Plus there's just too many chemicals on your carpet afterward.....permanently. It will stain the bottom of your furniture. And it may irritate your feet when you walk over it barefoot, especially if they're wet.

If you're gonna clean your carpet, you really need to pull it up and sweep up all the dust and dirt under your padding first. You'd be surprised how much gets under there! When you clean the surface, it stays wet underneath and next time you step on it, everything below just seeps up to the top again, making it even worse.  Just make sure you stretch the carpet when you lay it back down. If its old, it won't be too hard, and you can rent a couple of tools you need for cheap.

The best thing you can do all and all is just replace your carpet. You can keep your existing pad, only replacing where it is completely smashed (high traffic areas). Make sure u sweep under it though. There is some pretty inexpensive carpet out there and unless you're doing the whole house, you can probably do it yourself. Making seams is an art though.

And the absolute cheapest way to go is to just get some runners (long narrow rugs) and cover it up!
