My cat's eye is shutting more than the left. What could cause this?

It doesn't really look bloodshot, pussey, or swollen. It just shuts more, or is not really open most of the time. I noticed it yesterday, but it looks a little worse today. I was reading about respiratory infections, but he is up to date on shots and everything. I am hoping he got scratched outside (I only let him explore a little bit in the fenced ) backyard. We also just got a new cat, so maybe they got into it? My vet is closed, and if it persists I'm taking him in on Monday. Any ideas?

  1. Your cat probably has something inside its eye. Is the eye watery? If so, its nothing to worry about. Gently pry open the eyelids with two fingers. Look around for anything that looks like it shouldn't be there. If you see a thin line of white mucus around the base of the eye, that could be where the object in question that is irritating your cat's eye is, because cat's eyes form mucus around a foreign object to protect themselves. Once you have located the object, instill several drops of saline eye wash to flush out the eye; alternatively, you can use (if you have some) contact lens solution, or clear cool water from tap works fine. Use a cotton ball which is soaked in any one of these solutions, and squeeze it over the eye. If the foreign material is still there, gently pry it out with a wet cotton ball. If you do not feel comfortable doing this because your cat gets agitated, you can leave it to the vet.

If your cat seems more comfortable, you don't need to see a veterinarian for the next 24 hours. If your cat is still uncomfortable, seek veterinary attention immediately.

It's really nothing to worry about unless the object has actually penetrated  the eye. Don't try anything then, even though it's unlikely that this is the case. Just take your cat to the veterinarian, and quick!!!

It might also be allergies. Many cats who have been exposed to the outdoors have allergies to dust, pollen, etc.

Remember this, though-even the tiniest bit of dust can cause your cat to have a reaction, so stay calm.

    Good Luck!
