My cat attacked my dog after being best friends for 3 yrs?

I would try reintroducing them, you should be keeping them separate for now. If they have been friends for years then this should be easy. Rub the cat with a cloth and give it to the dog and do the same for the dog. If this goes well for both of them, bring them together through a door and have a person with each animal to gauge their reactions. If this goes well, bring both of them together on a leash to see each other. If this goes well, bring them together (on a leash!!) to see how they react. If this goes well, bring them together off their leashes and see how this goes. And if all of this goes well, then they have been properly re-introduced and shouldn't have any problems. If any of these steps isn't working, separate them immediately and wait a bit and then try the previous step again until it goes well. Reinforce positive reactions with treats and being pet and reinforce negative reactions with no rewards. Best of luck :)

How old is the cat? You know sometimes cats get fiecy when they get older. It's just like a human being, some older ones just get crabby! Good idea to keep them apart cause a cat can do damage!!
