My cat gets in feisty moods from time to time. It started again today I think its because today he played with twine for about an hour he played with it very violently and ran all around the house with it. Is this what triggered this sudden outburst of attacks. Also i took him for a walk today and when were going home he attacked me. How do i stop this?

  1. it just wont's to play and give it more attention

  2. There were so many great answers already...I just had to say I love that you take your cats for walks!

I have 4 cats (indoor).  The eldest smacks at me for attentions, the "momma" only gives love bites, but the kittens, especially the Male will literally leap into the air to get me.  He just wants to play.

  3. Your cat probably thought it was still an ok time to play and have fun.  They have to know that some times it is play time and sometimes not.  There has to be boundaries, that when crossed mean discipline.  Whether you use a water bottle or stern no, you have to let the cat know when he has done wrong.

Attacking you when coming home is not cool, and he should be punished.

If he gets a little fiesty when you are playing with him it is just because he is a cat and he needs exercise.

  4. water squirter aim near but not at the cat everytime he does it and also catnip can be great to help cats calm down. or talk to the vet about a herbal remedy =]

  5. Say NO! Or take him down like how a momma cat would do. Push him down to the ground, so he will know that your the momma cat. I know that sounds funny, but you have to show him that your the dominate alpha cat in the relationship. I mean don't be abusive or anything, just hold him down on the ground. He will learn. I mean heck you taught him to go out for walks, sounds like he is a smart cat!

  6. Mine does this too.

Sometimes there's no real reason we would understand for this behaviour - could be over excitement, a smell, a bad tempered moment, a wee freak out session at something...

What I tend to do is:

    1. always say 'NO' loudly  - and in the same, low tone of voice so he associates that voice with being bad and now knows what it means even when I use it if he's about to be jumpy and tends to stop.

    2. If you have a water squirter (and maybe carry a pistol around with you for a week or two) squirt at the same time as you say NO. But, here's the thing - you must squirt IMMEDIATELY so that the cat associates the bad behaviour with the negative squirted outcome, If you miss the chance to do this within a few seconds of the jumping then you'll need to make do with 'NO' and squirt him next time. He'll soon get the message.

    3. Distraction - carry a toy and fling it away from you and he should follow that.

    4. Never use body parts as play things - hands should be for stroking and feeding only.

    5. If not neutered this is something you need to consider if he's more than 6 months old. This should reduce that type of behaviour. Also, I'm not sure about taking him outside if he isn't going to be free to roam himself and once he;s neutered he might not be interested in doing that anyways? Just make sure there's nice stuff for him to take an interest in inside.

    6. Tire him out with play so that he gets out his (like male testosterone!) play aggression on toys and then leave him alone for at least 5 minutes after a play session to calm down.

    7. For prolonged aggression - like the running around - shout NO once and then shut the door on him and leave him in one room for 10 minutes or however long it takes for him to calm down - only then open the door to let him out, but don't make a fuss of him. Just let him re-enter your calm world calmly!

All the best - I think cats will be cats and we can jsut do what we can to try to minimise this sort of behaviour and make sure it isn't addressed to a person!

  7. Well my cat used to do that...but i had figured out to give it more attention and when your cat attacks you just give him a small hit not a hard one and just pet it when it calms down...that always worked with me....

    i hope i could help

  8. Take him to the vet.

  9. Use a spray bottle when he attacks you, but make sure not to do it when you think he is going to attack but hasn't yet because he won't know what he did wrong.

Try playing with him to get his energy out, but if he goes too far and starts attacking you instead of the toy, stop playing and walk away. Then he will know that you are not a toy and that he shouldn't be playing with you; he should be playing with the toy.

Also, if he isn't neutered then you should do that to make sure that he just isn't going through a stage.

    Hope I helped! :D
